To be eligible for the office of Mayor or City Council, a person must be at least 21 years of age, must meet the requirements of a qualified elector for members of the General Assembly as prescribed by state law, must be a registered voter in the City of Fayetteville and must be a bona fide resident of the City of Fayetteville for 1 year preceding the time of the holding of the election in which that person is a candidate. No person shall be eligible to serve as a Mayor or City Council member who shall have been convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude unless such person has received a full pardon and has all rights of citizenship restored.

The Mayor is the Chief Elected Official of the City government, presiding officer of the City Council, and responsible through the City Manager for the efficient and orderly administration of the City’s affairs. He may conduct or authorize inquiries and investigations into the conduct of the City’s affairs and shall have such powers and duties as may be provided by ordinance not inconsistent with the Charter.
You can announce your candidacy for office at any time. However, in order to run for office, you must submit your application during qualifying, which is held at the Fayetteville City Hall Clerk's Office the third week in August before the election in November
You may collect contributions at any time; however, you are required to complete a "Declaration of Intention to Accept Campaign Contributions" form (DOI) and submit it to the City Clerk's Office before you accept any contributions.
